Remembering Dr. Jonathan Smith

It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that we share with you the news that Dr. Jonathan Smith, poet, teacher, civil rights activist and icon, The Black Rep Board President and friend, passed away on Saturday, June 19th.

Ever generous in his spirit, he allowed us to create a performance out of a collection of his poetry - Do I Move You - to finish out our virtual season. His work and legacy are inextricably intertwined with ours and for that we will always be grateful. We are extending the run of Do I Move You to July 9th. For information on Do I Move You? or for tickets visit www.theblackrep.org.

At The Black Rep, Jonathan took the helm during a difficult period, as the COVID19 Pandemic created challenges to the performing arts and our community work. He donated his time and expertise to help us navigate those months as well as move forward with crafting a strategic plan to carry us to our 50th Anniversary from our 45th.
